Giant Eagle Owls are now known as Verreaux’s Eagle Owls. Standing at between 60 and 65 cms tall, they are the largest owls in Africa. Usually roosting in large, dense trees along river courses, they take up prominent perches at dusk from where they can glide down onto prey. These owls are soft grey with very fine barring and have distinctive pink eyelids. Their call is a deep grunting hoot which can be heard up to 5 kilometres away.
